Sheriff Dupnik

My new hero is Sheriff Clarence Dupnik of Tucson, Arizona.  He has seen  the hatred and racism, and heard the rhetoric in Arizona against Latinos, immigrants, and others.  He now sees the results of the hate speech that spews from the mouths of radio and TV pundits.  Sheriff Dupnik is correct in his assessment of the causes of the shooting.

ABC News:

The Arizona sheriff investigating the Tucson shooting that left U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords critically wounded had harsh words today for those engaging in political rhetoric, calling conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh "irresponsible" for continuing the vitriol.

"The kind of rhetoric that flows from people like Rush Limbaugh, in my judgment he is irresponsible, uses partial information, sometimes wrong information," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said today. "[Limbaugh] attacks people, angers them against government, angers them against elected officials and that kind of behavior in my opinion is not without consequences."

Sheriff Dupnik is right.

Talking Points Memo has the latest from a Republican lawmaker:

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) says political rhetoric doesn't really incite violent behavior at all -- but not before describing Arizona shooting suspect Jared Loughner as a "communist" and "the liberal of liberals."

"This guy appears to be a communist," Foxx told the Winston-Salem Journal. "His beliefs are the liberal of the liberals [sic]. There is no evidence whatsoever that this man was influenced by Sarah Palin or anybody in the Republican Party. This man is not a conservative; he's a fan of communism - that's the opposite of conservatism."

Is it possible that Virginia Foxx has been able to find out information that law enforcement officers, and the FBI have been unable to document?  It might be that she is just making up her own facts, as usual.
